Two of the most common questions we hear from customers setting up a new DoorBird are about sound: "Can I keep using my existing doorbell chime?" and "Can I make each button sound different?" The good news is yes to both — they're just handled in different ways, since one is about physical wiring and the other is about a setting inside the DoorBird app.
Keeping a traditional doorbell chime working alongside your DoorBird
Many homes already have a mechanical or electronic doorbell chime wired into the wall — the classic "ding-dong" box, or a plug-in chime unit. When you install a DoorBird, you don't necessarily have to give that up.
Most DoorBird door stations include a relay output, and many models also support the low-voltage AC wiring conventions that traditional doorbell chimes expect. In practice, keeping an existing chime alive alongside a DoorBird generally comes down to one of two approaches:
- Wiring the DoorBird's relay output to trigger your existing chime when the call button is pressed, so the physical chime rings at the same time the DoorBird sends a call to your phone or indoor station. This usually requires an electrician or installer familiar with low-voltage doorbell wiring, especially if your existing chime uses a transformer voltage that needs to be matched or adapted.
- Leaving the original doorbell wiring circuit intact and adding the DoorBird as a parallel device, rather than replacing the existing button entirely — this is more common in installations where the DoorBird is being added to an entryway that already has a functioning wired chime and the homeowner doesn't want to touch that circuit.
A few things worth double-checking before you attempt this yourself:
- Confirm the voltage and current rating of your existing chime transformer against what the DoorBird's relay output can safely switch — traditional doorbell transformers are often AC, while the DoorBird relay is generally intended for a dry contact / low-voltage DC signal, so a direct connection isn't always appropriate without additional hardware.
- Mechanical chimes with a physical solenoid draw more current momentarily than electronic chimes, which can matter for relay ratings.
- If in doubt, this is exactly the kind of task where a licensed electrician or a low-voltage installer earns their fee — miswiring a relay output can damage the DoorBird unit or the chime.
Setting a custom ringtone per call button
If your property has more than one call button — say, a front door and a side gate, or several buttons on a multi-tenant panel — it's easy for everyone in the household to lose track of which button was actually pressed just from a generic ring. DoorBird devices let you assign a distinct ringtone to each individual call button, so the sound itself tells you who's at which door.
Generally speaking, setting this up involves:
- Opening the settings for the specific call button (or the SIP/indoor station configuration tied to that button) within the DoorBird app or the device's administration interface.
- Selecting a ringtone from the built-in sound library, or uploading a custom audio file if your device and app version support custom uploads.
- Saving the change and doing a live test — press the button in question and confirm the correct sound plays on the receiving phone, indoor station, or app.
A couple of practical tips:
- If you're managing several buttons, give each one a genuinely distinct-sounding tone rather than similar variations — the goal is to be able to identify the button by ear without looking at your phone.
- If you're using DoorBird alongside a mobile app on multiple household members' phones, each person may need to select or confirm their own ringtone preference on their own device, depending on how notification sounds are handled by that phone's operating system.
- Ringtone assignment lives at the button/user level, not as a single global setting, so if a new button or user is added later, you'll want to revisit this setting for that new entry as well.
