If your DoorBird unit has both a standard Ethernet (RJ45) jack and a small screw-terminal block, you're not looking at redundant hardware. That terminal block is a Phoenix-style connector, and it handles jobs that a network cable was never designed for. Here's why it's there and how to wire it correctly.
Why DoorBird Units Have Two Connectors
The RJ45 port carries your network connection and, on most installs, Power over Ethernet (PoE) — that's how the intercom reaches your router, your app, and any video management software you're running. It's a data-and-power path, but it isn't built to switch the higher-current circuits that physical access hardware needs.
The Phoenix terminal block fills that gap. Depending on the model, it typically exposes low-voltage connection points for things like:
- Electric door strike or lock relay outputs
- Auxiliary or alarm relay contacts
- Digital inputs, such as a wired doorbell button or a request-to-exit sensor
- On some models, a DC power input as an alternative to PoE
Because the block is removable, you can land your field wiring on the plug while it's off the unit, then press the whole assembly back in once wiring is complete — much easier than working screws inside a wall-mounted enclosure.
Before You Start
- Cut the power. Disconnect PoE or DC power to the intercom, and de-energize any strike or lock circuit, before you land a single wire. Working on a live terminal block risks a short, a shock, or a damaged relay output.
- Identify each terminal. Check the labeling silkscreened on the unit or its quick-start sheet — terminal blocks vary by model, and pin order is not universal across the DoorBird lineup. Confirm which pins are relay/output, which are inputs, and which (if any) are power, before you strip a single wire.
- Check your strike or lock's requirements. Note its voltage, current draw, and whether it's fail-safe or fail-secure. This tells you whether the intercom's built-in relay can drive it directly or whether you'll need an external relay in between.
Wiring the Phoenix Connector Step by Step
- Strip the wire ends to the length specified for your terminal block (usually a short strip, often around 5-7mm, though you should confirm against your unit's documentation) — too much bare wire risks touching an adjacent terminal, too little won't seat under the clamp.
- Insert each conductor fully into its terminal opening, matching it to the function you identified in the prep step.
- Tighten the screw until the wire is firmly clamped — snug, not over-torqued. Over-tightening can shear small-gauge conductors; under-tightening leaves a connection that works during testing and fails weeks later from vibration or thermal cycling.
- Tug-test each wire gently after tightening to confirm it's mechanically secure.
- Keep low-voltage and higher-current runs separated where your wiring path allows it, and avoid running strike wiring parallel to unshielded network cable over long distances — it reduces the chance of induced noise on either circuit.
- Re-seat the terminal block into the unit firmly and evenly so every pin makes contact.
- Restore power and test each function individually — trigger the relay output, test the input, confirm the strike releases as expected — before you close up the mounting box.
Common Wiring Mistakes to Avoid
- Exceeding the relay's rated current. If your strike or lock draws more than the onboard relay is rated for, use an external relay or a dedicated power supply sized for that load rather than pushing it through the intercom's contacts directly.
- Mixing up normally-open and normally-closed contacts on a relay output, which can leave a door unlocked when you intended it locked, or vice versa. Confirm which state you're wiring to before you commit.
- Reversing polarity on inputs or DC power terminals where polarity matters — a quick check with a multimeter before connecting takes a minute and avoids a return trip.
- Loose strands on stranded wire. A stray strand bridging two adjacent terminals is one of the most common causes of an intermittent fault that's hard to diagnose later. Twist stranded ends tightly before inserting, or use ferrules if your terminal block accepts them.
