Every DoorBird install needs a power decision made early, because it shapes how you run cable and what hardware you'll need at both ends. The two common paths are Power over Ethernet (PoE) and a traditional low-voltage power supply (transformer). Neither is universally "better" — the right choice depends on your building, your existing wiring, and what else the intercom needs to drive. Here's how to think through it.
Power over Ethernet (PoE): One Cable for Data and Power
PoE delivers power to the intercom over the same Ethernet cable that carries its network connection, using either a PoE-capable network switch or a standalone PoE injector placed between a regular switch and the unit. The intercom negotiates power with the source and draws only what it needs, up to the limit of the PoE standard in use.
Where PoE tends to be the stronger choice:
- New construction or any install where you're already running structured Ethernet cabling to the door location — you get power essentially for free on the same run.
- Multi-device sites, where centralizing power at a PoE switch in a rack or closet makes it easier to monitor, reboot, or replace power for several intercoms and cameras from one place.
- Installs that want centralized backup power. Put the PoE switch on a UPS and every connected device rides through a brief outage without needing its own battery.
Things to plan for with PoE:
- Confirm your switch or injector delivers enough power at the specific PoE class the intercom requires — a switch that's fully loaded with cameras and other devices can run short of power budget even if it has PoE ports available.
- If the intercom is driving a relay for a door strike or maglock with meaningful current draw, check whether that load is meant to run off the PoE-derived power or needs its own separate supply — pushing high-draw hardware through PoE-derived power beyond what the unit is designed for can cause brownouts or resets.
- Cable run length matters for reliable PoE delivery; if you're near the practical limit for your cabling, test the connection under load rather than assuming a link light means adequate power.
A Traditional Power Supply: A Dedicated Low-Voltage Run
The alternative is a separate DC (or in some designs, low-voltage AC) power supply feeding the intercom directly through its Phoenix terminal block, independent of the network switch entirely.
Where a dedicated supply tends to make more sense:
- Retrofits with existing low-voltage wiring already at the door — for example, replacing an older wired doorbell or intercom where two-conductor wiring is already in the wall, but a full Ethernet run isn't practical to add.
- Sites without PoE-capable networking equipment, where adding PoE injectors for one or two devices costs more effort than just running a local transformer.
- Installs where the strike, maglock, or other connected hardware needs more current than you want to route through PoE-derived power — a dedicated supply sized for that load keeps it isolated from the network power budget entirely.
Things to plan for with a dedicated supply:
- The intercom still needs a network connection for video, app notifications, and remote access — a traditional power supply doesn't remove the need to get Ethernet (or Wi-Fi, on models that support it) to the location.
- Backup power becomes a per-location question rather than a centralized one — if you want the door to keep working during an outage, that supply needs its own battery backup.
- Voltage and current ratings must match what your specific DoorBird model expects; an undersized or mismatched supply can cause unreliable operation even when everything is wired correctly.
How to Decide
As a general rule of thumb: if you're pulling new cable and have PoE networking gear in place, PoE is usually the simpler long-term choice — fewer components at the door, centralized management, and often centralized backup power. If you're working with existing low-voltage wiring, don't have PoE infrastructure, or your connected door hardware draws more current than you want on the network power budget, a dedicated supply is often the more straightforward path. Some installs reasonably combine both — PoE for the intercom's core power and network connection, with a separate supply feeding a higher-draw strike or maglock through the relay output.
Whichever route you choose, confirm the exact voltage, current, and PoE class requirements against your specific DoorBird model's datasheet before ordering equipment — these specifications differ across the product line.
