When a home or unit with a DoorBird video intercom changes hands, the device itself doesn't automatically follow the new resident — the DoorBird account tied to it does. That account controls who can view live video, unlock doors remotely, and manage other users, so ownership needs to be formally transferred so the previous owner loses access and the new owner gains full control. Here's how the process works from both sides of the transaction.
Why a formal ownership transfer matters
A DoorBird unit is registered to a person's account, not to the property address. Skip the transfer, and the previous owner could technically still see who's at the door, unlock it remotely, or manage connected users long after they've moved out. A proper handoff closes that gap and gives the incoming resident real administrative control over their own front door.
Step 1: The outgoing owner starts the process
If you're selling your home or moving out of a property with a DoorBird installed, begin before closing or move-out day:
- Decide if the hardware is staying with the property. Most sellers leave the intercom installed for the buyer, similar to any other built-in fixture.
- Save anything tied to your account that you want to keep. Stored video clips, custom user lists, and schedules live on your account and typically won't carry over to the new owner. Download or export what matters before you hand things off.
- Contact DB Store USA to request the transfer. Send our support team the property address, the device's serial number (printed on the unit itself or visible in the app's device information screen), and the incoming owner's name and email address.
- Confirm the transfer has completed, then remove your own access. Once the new owner is fully set up, delete the property from your app, remove any saved credentials, and revoke any RFID fobs, keypad codes, or app users tied to your account.
Step 2: The incoming owner accepts and sets up their account
If you've just bought a home or moved into a unit with an existing DoorBird:
- Create or sign in to your own DoorBird app account. Ownership transfers to an account, not a device on its own — you'll need your own login before the transfer can be completed.
- Watch for the transfer confirmation. Once DB Store USA processes the request, you'll receive instructions to accept ownership and link the device to your account.
- Reset access from the previous owner. After the device is yours, change the admin password, re-pair the unit's WiFi credentials if you're on a different network, and clear out any RFID fobs, keypad PINs, or authorized users you don't recognize.
- Set up your own users and preferences. Add household members, configure motion alerts and schedules, and choose a cloud recording plan if you'd like continuous video history.
What DB Store USA needs to process a transfer
To protect both parties, we verify ownership before completing a transfer. Be ready to provide:
- The property address and the device's serial number
- Proof of the ownership change — closing documents, a signed lease, or a current utility bill in the new resident's name
- Contact information for both the outgoing and incoming account holders, where applicable
If you're the new resident and the previous owner is unreachable or unresponsive, you can still start a transfer request — see our article on getting access as a new owner for that path.
A few things worth doing before closing
- Sellers: note the device's serial number and any existing QR code or digital passport info so it's easy to hand off.
- Buyers: ask the seller (through your agent, if needed) to initiate the account transfer as part of the closing paperwork, rather than leaving it for after move-in.
- Both parties: treat the DoorBird transfer like you would a garage door code or alarm system reset — it's a security step, not just an app formality.
